On 11 November 2024, Woven Whānau and Whānau Care hosted 18 grandparents who are raising their mokopuna in the Whanganui Regiona at a wānanga/ workshop. The event was designed to provide the grandparents with an opportunity to share with Woven Whānau and Whānau Care what would have made their caregiving experience feel more supported. Together, over two hours, the grandparents shared; their self-care tips, how they felt at different stages of their caregiving journey and what supports would have helped them, they shared what they would have needed by way of financial, emotional, behavioural and legal support from different agencies, and their vision for a service to better support the next whānau caregivers who were about to take their tamariki into their care.
Next step, Whānau Care is going to disseminate the information the grandparents shared in to a model of practice and business case to create a service to support whānau caregivers. Stay tuned for more information in early 2025.
